Individual and Society – A Spiritual Perspective - a talk by - Dr. Atul Pokharel - March 29, Sunday
Society exists when we do things for other people or are restrained by other people. Religion tells you what to do. With spirituality, you figure it outfor yourself. Two timeless questions are: What IS one’s relationship to society? And: What SHOULD be one’s relationship to society? Swami Vivekananda quotes a sannyasin from the story in which birds sacrifice themselves to try to feed hungry people, as saying: Each is great in his own place, but the duty of one is not the duty of another. Questions we can ask include: Who can tell me my place in society? How do I know this person is right? Does this person know my particular circumstances? Does my duty change over time? Do I seek guidance each time?.. Swamiji says that our duty is helping others but the world does not need our help. This seems like a contradiction. One solution to allocating duties is that the powerful and wealthy do more prestigious duties. People have been striving to straighten out the world, but it curls up again. We do have far greater control over our own actions. Swamiji says to work in an unattached manner and to not expect any results. The world owes you nothing. Your duty is to help others. Swamiji says that the act of helping in an unattached manner is a spiritual exercise. By its nature, a duty has to be done. We have a sense of what is good and what is bad, but this is arbitrary and constantly changing. The division between the individual and society is ultimately an illusion, like the rope seen as a snake. As long as we are caught in the illusion, we must struggle with it. We must turn our work into a gradual way out of the hypnosis. Can we get rid of poverty and injustice? Probably not. But we have to sincerely try for getting rid of it, so that we get out of this hypnotic separation of individual and society.
